A Small Victory

Buzz, buzz, buzz says the alarm at 5am…

Lizard Brain: Nah, too early, too tired, catch a few more Zzzz’s

Semi-conscious Brain: Get up, don’t be a lazy bastard.

Lizard Brain: Listen, you stayed up too late.  Drank champagne.  You’re too tired.  Go back to sleep.

Semi-conscious Brain: All that is true, but another 15 minutes of sleep isn’t gonna help anything…

Lizard  Brain: Yeah, but now it’s already been a couple minutes.  You’re gonna get out of the house late… It’ll stress you out and ruin your whole day.

Semi-conscious Brain: You’ve got a good point there…

Lizard Brain:  Of course I do… Listen, you can always go to the gym tomorrow to make up for today.  Go back to sleep.

Semi-conscious Brain:  Wait!  You sneaky SOB, putting off until tomorrow is what got me into this mess! STFU.

Lizard Brain: …  …  …

Next thing I know, I’m in my gym gear and brushing my teeth.  Yes, I DID in fact get out the door 5 minutes late.  Yes, my morning routine was rushed and a bit stressful.   However, I knew I’d regret missing a workout MORE than I’d appreciate the extra sleep.

I think I’ve finally turned a corner.  Turns out the hardest battles are often in your own head.  Sometimes you’ve got tell that comforting, excuse making voice in your head to shut up, and push yourself to do what you know is best…  Procrastination is one of my absolute worst habits and hard as hell to break, but the payoff feels great.  I highly recommend it.

Back at it!

First workout of the New Year this morning.

It was rough getting outta the house – 5:15am, pitch black, cold and pouring rain – but once I got there I was glad I did it.

Today was chest, biceps, triceps and abs. I dropped 20lbs off all my previous weights, so as to not over do it my first time back out. I clearly made the right decision, cuz I’m still feeling it!

I wish I could say it was fun. It wasn’t. But it’s not fun being sluggish and being squeezed into your clothes either.

Listen, if I can do this you can do this. A little really does go a long way. Get out there, lift heavy things. Push yourself. It sucks mightily at first, then you’ll wonder why you went so long without it!

We’ve got a lot of missed time to make up for. The last couple years have put a hurting on a lot of people for a lot of reasons, and there is nothing on the horizon telling us this year is gonna be much better.

Better to face adversity with a clear head and a strong body right?

And like it or not, fitness is one of those things you simply can’t outsource. It’s up to you to make the best possible version of you. Nobody is going to do it for you.

Ok, I’ll get off my soapbox now. I wrote that as much for ME as I did for my readers – I’ve got a lot of ingrained laziness to overcome!

Outta whack…

It’s been a weird week… We got back from our road trip late Thursday night, then it was back to the office Friday, which was a whirlwind of activity and turned into a 10+ hour day. Saturday was spent unpacking and fun stuff like laundry…then back to work Sunday for another full day…

And now it’s Monday and again and I’m smack dab in the middle of the real world. Drats.

BUT! I did manage to drag my lazy butt to the gym this morning before work though, so at least I’ve got that goin’ for me. Now if I can just keep it up for the rest of the week!

And I’ve got plans to meet up with one of my oldest, nearest and dearest friends tonight to catch up, so here’s to hoping Monday is painless and quick!

Take care of yourselves out there, and do your best to have a great week! Find something to be grateful for!

Damnit, Gym!!

First day back to the gym in way too long…

I’d had a really good year in ’21, making it down to work out 4 to 5 times a week, then slacked off around Christmas…then caught the Plague…then caught the flu…then went on vacation. Next thing you know, four months have passed and most of my gains are gone. <sigh>

Planet Fitness, I can’t say I missed you, but I’m glad to be back. See you again real soon!
